Reunion of the Old Fifth Infantry
The organization known as the Fifth Michigan Veteran Volunteer Infantry held their annula reunion at Rochester, Oakland County, Michigan, Sep 4. T. J. West acted as secretary. An unusually large number of the boys were present and were heartily received by the citizens of the village and surrounding country. The veterand were serenaded, banqueted, marched and welcomed in a manner that touchced them to the heart. The local committees were all well drilled and nothing was left undone which could in any way added to the enjoyment of the occasion. The boys of the "Old Fifth' will always cherish feelings toward the committees, Rochester Cornet Band, Glee Club and all citizens of Rochester and vicinity, of the kindest sort.
One of the most interesting features of the occasion was the presence of Mrs. Anna Etheredge Hokes, more familiarly known in the history of our regiment as Anna Etheredge, and by the "boys" as "Gentle Annie" from Washington D. C., to attend this gathering of the survivors of the Fifth Michigan Infantry. Anna was dearly regarded by the soldiers, and may were there present whose blood had been staunched and wounds dressed by her tender and loving hands on the field of battle. She was always at the front of the battle raged the hardest, flitting from one stricken comrade to another, like a ministering angel. Anna is at present living in Washington, acting in the capacity of a clerk in the Treasury Department, where sha had been since the war.
Nothing occurred during the day or evening to mar the pleasure of any one present, except a trifle of no importance which spoiled the hop the old soldiers were to have had and left some feeling toward Rev. Mr. Brown
